A team of BW Legal colleagues took to the streets and raised over £4,000 for Leeds-based homeless charity, Simon on the Streets.
BW Legal was the headline sponsor for Simon on the Street’s annual ‘Sleep with Simon’ event which took place on Thursday 26th September 2019. The challenge was to sleep outside for one night to gain a better understanding of the harsh realities of homelessness.
Throughout 2019, BW Legal has worked with Simon on the Streets raising money through bake sales, dress down days and raffles. The money goes a long way in supporting rough sleepers deeply entrenched in homelessness through outreach in Leeds, Bradford and Kirklees.
The charity also use funds to provide workers with training and support, volunteer development, safe guarding training, social media and campaigning and supporting volunteers who undertake soup runs on the streets.
A total of 14 BW Legal colleagues took part in the challenge held at the Tilt Yard, Royal Armouries in Leeds. In total, 120 people bedded down and raised £26,000 for the charity.
Food, hot drinks were provided and participants enjoyed entertainment by the Commoners Choir and a bedtime story by Slung Low. Rob Barrowcliff gave a moving speech about being homeless from the age of 12 to 20 years old and how outreach workers like Simon on the Streets helped him turn his life around.
When it came to bedding down for the night, the team gained an insight into what it’s like to sleep outside without shelter. It was a cold and uncomfortable night but the team came away with a renewed understanding of why supporting vulnerable people on the streets is so important.
Weary colleagues returned to work the next morning and were treated to a breakfast of bacon sandwiches, crumpets and hash browns. They were also given half a day off to recuperate from the night before.
On the same morning, colleagues also took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raising over £300 for Macmillan. There were some lovely bakes and some show-stopping cakes bought in and shared for donations so we are overwhelmed with the generosity of our colleagues and how charitable they are.
